Sabres roll the low-light reel
Devils make Buffalo pay for mistakes
By John Vogl
News Sports Reporter

One thing has become obvious with the Buffalo Sabres. They aren't good enough to overcome mistakes.

When the Sabres play a solid, clean game, they can compete with anyone. It's shown recently with victories over New Jersey and Pittsburgh, two teams that had been playing well entering the meetings.

But when the Sabres err, they have little chance. Take Wednesday night. The Sabres gave up a huge rebound, lacked discipline at a crucial juncture, turned the puck over in their zone and followed by failing to get it out when given the chance.

The result, as if there was any doubt? A 5-3 loss to the Devils in HSBC Arena.

The Sabres' home woes continued as mistake after mistake doomed them to their third loss in the past four games at the foot of Washington Street.

"We stick to our game, we play our game simple with hard hockey, we're a tough team to beat," Sabres center Paul Gaustad said. "Tonight, we made some mistakes we shouldn't."

Most of them ended up in the net. On four of the five goals, miscues led to the red light going on:

*Travis Zajac gobbled up a juicy rebound served by Ryan Miller to make it 1-0 just 96 seconds into the game. The Sabres cleared a path for Miller to see Mike Mottau's shot from the point, and when the puck got to Miller, he directed it to the slot with his blocker. Zajac whistled it right back past it.

"Teams are really good in this league, and if you're not prepared and not ready to go, they'll take advantage of it," Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta said.

*Disciplined play helped the Sabres in their 4-2 victory in New Jersey on Saturday, but its disappearance allowed the Devils to take a 2-1 lead. One game after staying out of the penalty box, the Sabres trudged to it twice in 49 seconds to set up a New Jersey five-on-three.

Clarke MacArthur, bounced around repeatedly on a long shift, took out his frustration with a cross-check as he went to the bench. Henrik Tallinder joined him after a hooking call. The Devils came through when Zach Parise buried his own rebound with two seconds left on the two-man advantage. It was the first power-play goal allowed by the Sabres in four games and just their second in the past 11. Both came on five-on-threes.

"That's a bad penalty," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said of MacArthur. "Our penalty killing has been excellent, but you don't need to take undisciplined penalties the way we took them. They end up catching up to you."

*The Devils' third goal, which gave them a 3-1 lead, came when Bryce Salvador's shot hit the skate of a Sabres player in front. No mistake there.

But the fourth goal was a clear error. David Clarkson swiped the puck from defenseman Nathan Paetsch in the Buffalo zone, and he walked in alone to beat Miller. It gave the Devils a 4-2 lead with 13:56 to play.

*A litany of errors by Maxim Afinogenov allowed New Jersey to widen the lead to 5-2 with 10:29 left. His weak clear attempt was kept in by Clarkson, who then walked right around the winger. Miller stopped Clarkson's chance, but Brian Rolston put home the rebound right in front of Afinogenov.

"We overplayed, made some bad mistakes," Ruff said. "It's mistakes that we typically haven't been making on the road, we make at home.

"We could have easily got the puck out on the fifth goal. We could have easily got it out on the fourth goal, and we overplayed those.

"Ryan had a tough night. We had a couple defensemen that had a tough night."

There were too many tough nights to overcome goals by Drew Stafford, Kaleta and Gaustad. The Sabres have two days to fix them as the Los Angeles Kings visit the Sabres' house of mediocrity on Friday.

"There's going to be mistakes out there no matter what," Kaleta said, "but you've got to rebound from them and work harder."

1. We see that the episode are starting to "recycle" some of the season one monsters. What monsters would you like to see revisited?

I'd really like the Strigas to be revisited. Something Wicked was a very good episode, and I loved how they showed the Wee!Winchesters. I'm hoping they can bring tese creatures back, but have Sam save Dean from it this time.

2. In the season one finale, Sam draws the devil's trap onto the impala and explains its function, and although this symbol is not brought up again, the episode title is Devil's Trap. What do you think is its the significance?

Well, think about it. At the end of the episode, the yellow eyed demon totalled the Impala, correct? That could be because those signs somehow performed the opposite of what they're supposed to do and caused the demon to try and kill them likie that.

3. What is your favourite season two episode so far? And why?

Born Under A Bad Sign. Mainly because of evil!Sam, and to see what it would be like if he really did go all evil. Jared's acting was...awesome. There's no other word to describe his acting in that episode, it was so amazing.

4. Sam or evil!Sam?

What a tough question! *laughs* I'd go for puppy dog faced Sam over evil!Sam anyday, thank you.

5. If the Winchester brothers got tossed into another fandom (TV show, book, etc), which fandom do you think they'll be the most at home in? Which one would they be the most out-of-place in?

I want to say Smallville for a good toss in. Out of place...hm, probably Veronica Mars.

If you didn't see it, watch it now.

Because of this cheap shot, Drury is out indefinitely.
I love you Chris "Magic Fingers" Drury. Please be okay.

Also, watch when Lindy is yelling at the ref right after Drury gets hit. Watch closely to the left, and see Vanek screaming at the ref, too. That's awesome. I love that man so much, sticking up for his Captain like that.

I'm not even going to turn this into a letter, because I want everyone. EVERYONE; to know how much I love and respect this team. Which is why I'm going to leave this open for others to see.

The Buffalo Sabres had been left in the dust for quite awhile over the past few years. They were about to go bankrupt until Tom Golisano bought them. He made quite the great move. Last year, the Sabres made it into the playoffs - all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals, and lost in Game 7 against Carolina. But they required a new found respect from all the fans. All of us who kept a close eye on them ever since the Sabres franchise began realized 'Can this be the year we win it?'
It started out with the 10-0 game wins until the Atlanta Thrashers defeated us in a shootout. That game, I first began to watch the Sabres again and keep a close eye on the game. I'm so glad I did.
Over the next months, the Sabres faced hardships - the Daniel Briere/Alexander Ovechkin incident, disappearing in the third period when we were in the lead causing us to lose, trade rumors, injuries.
You know what? I couldn't love this team more because of the respect, the loyalty, and the friendship shared amongst the teammates.
The game tonight, versus Ottawa, Chris Drury was decked by Chris Neils. Drew Stafford, who is not known for fighting, went after him. Why? To stick up for his captain - a leader to all of the players on the team.
Next line comes out, and Adam Mair gets on it with Jason Spezza, as Andrew Peters was going after Dany Heately. And then, all hell broke loose.
Mair and Peters began fighting, as Patrick Kaleta (newcomer to the NHL, first time) helped out with the fighting. And get this - Ray Emery and Marty Biron? Hell yes, they decked it out too. Both of them were kicked out of the game, as was Andrew Peters.
But you know what the whole amazing thing about this is?
We won this game. We won it based on determination, loyalty, and friendship. Teammates stick up for teammates, they give each other advice, and they don't take kindly to getting pushed around.

I am so proud of this team. I was in tears when Chris was down on the ground bleeding. But the boys made me smile through tears, with the fights. They were fighting for their captain. They fought for the rest of the game, and came out as winners. Seeing them embrace each other after the game was over made my heart soar.

And if you hate this team because of that - there is something wrong with you.

Basically your tale of angels coming to tell people about evil which they need to stop by killing others.
Or was it?
My mom and I thought Dean's fetish with the 'Magic Fingers' bed was pretty hilarious. The frequent looks he would give it during the episode were great, seeing as how he wanted to use it so badly, even though he had no quarters. xD
When Sam told Dean that he prayed all the time, I was surprised at Dean's reaction. He seemed pretty tense about it, even though I know he's a skeptic about faith and everything, especially during the episode titled 'Faith'. I just thought he would understand him a little better than he did.
Now, my mom had thought that after Father Gregory told Sam to kill that one guy, he would actually do it. I told her, from past experiences, Sam has never really done anything 'evil' yet. Even in the next episode, I don't think he will, at least when he's not possessed. (Since that's what it appears to be in the previews, with the black eyes and all.)
I actually thought this was a really good episode, though it moved a bit too quickly for me. I give it an 8 out of 10.

1. If you could ask Kripke one question about the show and have it answered, what would it be?
"Do you think Supernatural might become a cult classic if it gains enough fans?"

2. How do you think Sam and Dean's morals are defined? And what are they?
Sam's morals are, it seems, to protect as many people as they possibly can. He doesn't care about what happens to himself as long as others make it. Dean on the other hand cares about what happens to both Sammy and the victims during a hunt. Dean promised his father he would look after Sam, and he'd never forgive himself if something happened to him.

3. During Provenance, we see that Sam is very reluctant to start any relationships, because he's afraid that the people around him will get hurt. Do you think his thoughts on this topic has changed since then? If they have, do you think they've made him even more cautious, or more relaxed?
I think his thoughts did indeed change since then. Sam was still planning on going back to Stanford when he was with Sarah, and during that time, he was very cautious about the people he met during a hunt. Now, I think he is more relaxed with people that he likes. With Ava, he told her to go home so that she would be safe, but now that's she's gone, he feels that it's his responsibility to find her and bring her back.

4. We see in second season that while the mothers of some "chosen" kids died in a fire, others remain alive and healthy. Why do you think this is so? And how do you think the demon chooses who stays alive and who dies?
I believe that the children who had mothers that died in the nursery fire are the ones who can control when they turn evil and when they do not. Max began using his powers for evil because of his family, Andy starting using them because he thought it was cool, and Sam uses it to help people, not for evil. Children like Ava are either controlled by the Demon and have no choice, or are captured by him and then used for evil. The Demon chooses who stays alive and who dies by probably their ability to kill. Max killed himself, because he had that power to. Scott was killed by Gordon because of his ability. If the children whose mothers didn't die in a nursery fire are controlled by the Demon, they probably have to be able to kill someone and not be reluctant.

5. If it came down to it, do you think Dean will be able to keep the promise he made to Sam and kill his brother?
Sam is the only family that Dean has left. He'd break that promise, he wouldn't keep it. I know I wouldn't if I were Dean.

1.) What's the most heartbreaking incident/fact that's been presented in the episodes so far?

I would have to choose Dean's breakdown in Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things. Dean thinks that he's partially to blame for his father's death because of the deal he made with the Demon, and can't take it anymore. Plus, he was still keeping in the secret at this point in time. He knew it was going to be hard for him to take care of his brother while he was feeling this way - especially if Sam could turn evil at any second.

2.) We've been seeing a lot of new guest stars this season. Would you like to see some of those characters come back, or do you think it's better to just have new characters?

Bring back old guest stars, because I think that would be an awesome thing about the show. Recurring characters. I don't think it's good to constantly have new characters, because then that can throw a lot of people off. I really hope they bring Sarah back!

3.) Do you think we've seen the last of Gordon?

Ptsh, no way. My mother and I believe strongly that he'll break out of prison in no time. We probably won't see him for a couple of episodes, though.

4.) Do you think we've seen the last of Jo? (At least for this season?)

To my dismay, no. I read an article saying that Jo would be coming back for a big episode soon, and that she's not Dean's love interest anymore. I guess I really shouldn't hate her character anymore, then.

5.) What are you opinions on Ava Wilson? What do you think happened to her? Is she a "good" character, or an "evil-playing-good" character?

Ava Wilson is such a cute character. She just seems totally down to earth - like Cat from Asylum. I'm beginning to believe that she was actually kidnapped by the demon, and that she's a good character. Though, when Sam & Dean finally found her, she might be...brainwashed by the Demon? Could be.

1. What's the quality you admire the most about your favourite guest star?
I felt that Sarah was such a strong character. Even when she had no idea of the danger she was going into, she still told Sam and Dean that she would go with them. She didn't struggle at all. Also, I felt like she was the most down to earth guest star to appear on the show.

2. Of the characters we've met, who do you think acts the most like a mother figure (other than Mary) towards the boys?
Missouri for sure. She put the boys in their place, more specifically Dean, if they seemed to do something wrong. John came to Missouri after Mary had died, and she seems like the best person who could look like the mother figure to the two boys.

3. How do you think the lack of a permanent female presence in their lives has affected the brothers?
I don't want to say that this is why relationships haven't worked out with both brothers, but it does seem to be like that. They can't exactly give the girl all that loving because of hunting, and the fact that it might even remind them of their mother. Though, I think this is why Dean feels like he has to protect Sam no matter what.

4. Do you believe the different lighting cast on characters in this show is of any significance at all? And if so, what do you believe it's an indication of?
I really don't believe that this is indicating anything, but you know Kripke. ;D Tons of tricks up his sleeve.

5. Recommend one or two fanfics in this fandom that you've really enjoyed. (Please include whether pairings if applicable.)
I'm going to leave this as N/A, because I haven't read fanfics in a LONG time. *sigh*

1.) Would you like to see John Winchester back on the show?
It would always be great if John came back on the show, even if it were only in spiritual form, or he came back from the dead for good. His character is too awesome to be gone forever. Plus, I'm sure most of the fangirls would be super excited to see Papa Winchester back!

2.) If you answered yes to the above question: how would you like it to happen? (Resurrection, flashbacks, soul relocation, etc.) If you answered no: why not?
As I said, if he appeared in a paranormal sense like Mary had in 'Home', then that would be great. Let the boys know that he's proud of them, and everything. He never truly got to say goodbye to Sam anyways.

3.) If Sam's "secret" involves him becoming evil, how do you think Dean will react? Do you think Dean would actually be able to kill Sam, if he had to?
My mom and I have been discussing the secret, and she's pretty sure the secret is that Sam is going to become evil. Seeing as how Dean's been acting this season, I thinks that's why he's so broken up and crumbling under the pressure a lot lately. He doesn't want to kill anything with a small sense of innocence left in it even, because he's afraid that's what will happen to Sam.
I really don't think Dean would kill Sam if he had to. Dean would do anything for his brother, and that means protect him from being killed, even if he is evil.

4.) We all know Mary's death has had a huge effect on the Winchester family, but do you think it affected Sam, Dean, and John differently?
I do think it affected each family member differently. Sam hardly even knew Mary, so he grew up with just Dean and John with him. Sam wanted to be the 'normal' one of the family, and didn't want to get invloved with the hunting as much as Dean and John, since they had known Mary longer. John, of course, lost the only woman he had ever loved, so he wanted to go out and kill the demon. Dean just wanted to do it, because he saw how it affected his dad, and he wanted Sam to have as normal a childhood as possible. Older brother protecting the younger one. He wanted the demon to be dead quickly so that this could happen.

5.) How do you think Sam and Dean's relationship as brothers has affected their role as hunters?
Dean and Sam being brothers helps them work better together. I think this affects how they take care of business, and other things. They also protect one another, and two heads are better than one.

1. How did you first hear about SPN? And when did you start watching? I actually first heard about Supernatural from my mom. We're always ordering DVDs from Netflix, and one day she had asked me if I wanted to check out Supernatural with her. It's safe to say that after half way through the Pilot, I was hooked. This happened in September, so I actually began watching the second season before fully completing watching the first season. *laughs*
2. We all have our squee-moments over Jared and Jensen. Post your absolute favourite (one only!) picture of the two.Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This picture is awesome on so many levels
3. Which character would you least like to wake up next to without being able to remember how you got there? I'll have to go with Gordon on this one. I'd wake up, see him, and then probably try to steal all of his vampire hunting items and hide them somewhere that he'd never find them. Then I'd just leave him for Sam & Dean to find. =P
4. Your favourite brotherly quote so far? "We were just starting to be brothers again."
5. There are a lot of shippers in this fandom, as well as quite a few non-shippers. What is your view on Wincest? I have no problem with Wincest. What surprised me, actually, was Supernatural is the only fandom where I can even stand reading incest. Maybe it's the boys turning me over, I don't know. xD But most Wincest stories are enjoyable to read, to me anyways.

[adjective]:

Pretentiously academian

'How will you be defined in the dictionary?' at QuizGalaxy.com</td>

So, in technicality, I'm a word to describe a person as smart? Heh, I'm game with that.

I just want all my friends to know - You eat pork, you're also eating a pig's feces. How do I know this?

Well, my mom has this book, right? It's about food, and how food companies aren't telling you the truth about things. Let's zoom in on a pig and it's life being alive. The pig rolls around in dirt, stink, and yes, eats it's own feces. Thus, after digesting this, the feces stick to the pig's meat and fat. The farmer takes the pig to the butcher shop where they chop the pig up. They place chemicals onto the meat and fat, trying to rid it of germs, and whatnot. The feces are still a part of the meat and fat, mind you. They put this in a market. he people buy it. They cook it, and digest it. What does this mean? While you're immensely enjoying the taste of ribs in your mouth, a pig feces is heading towards your stomach too.

Oh, and for people who have NO idea what feces means, feces = shit.

Food for thought.
